Olustee Battlefield is Baker's Civil War ground

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park in Baker County preserves the site of Florida's largest Civil War battle.

Olustee can be easy to miss unless you know what happened there.

Florida State Parks describes Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park as the site of Florida’s largest Civil War battle. The battle took place on February 20, 1864, in a pine forest near Olustee. More than 10,000 troops fought for about five hours, and the park notes that three U.S. Colored Troops units took part, including the 54th Massachusetts.

That makes this Baker County place much bigger than its quiet setting suggests. It is a Civil War site, a Black military history site, and a North Florida memory site all at once. It also has a long public-history life. The battlefield became Florida’s first State Historic Monument in 1909, decades before it became a state park.

If you visit, start with the park’s current hours and visitor center details. Then give the ground some room. The pine woods are calm now, but the story carried here is heavy, and it deserves more than a quick photo from the road.
