Miami-Dade Courthouse still anchors a civic skyline
The historic Miami-Dade County Courthouse is a downtown civic landmark, with a court, jail, government, and Miami skyline story all in one building.
The old Miami-Dade County Courthouse makes downtown Miami feel like a government city, not only a skyline city.
Miami-Dade County’s 2025 legislative record describes the courthouse at 73 West Flagler Street as the historic courthouse, built in 1928. It served as the primary civil courthouse for Miami-Dade County. It also carried jail, criminal courthouse, county government, and City of Miami government history. The county record also notes its 28 floors and its early place as a major high-rise.
That is a very Miami story. The building is civic, but it is also tall, urban, and tied to growth. It puts courtrooms, records, and old government work into the same downtown view.
For someone going downtown, the main lesson is practical too. Historic court buildings and current court service are not always the same thing. Offices can move. Security can change. A record search, jury matter, civil case, marriage record, or payment question may point to a different counter.
Before planning an official errand, check the current Miami-Dade Clerk or court page for the exact division, address, hours, and access rules. If you are walking downtown for the view, look up at the courthouse and remember that Miami’s civic history is part of the city scene.
