Leu Gardens gives Orlando a shaded old estate story

Leu Gardens gives Orlando fifty acres of plants, paths, and an old house story that started long before the modern tourist map.

Leu Gardens is one of those Orlando places that changes the pace of the city.

The land’s recorded garden story reaches back to 1858, when David W. Mizell acquired the property. Several families shaped it over time. Harry P. Leu bought the land in 1936, and he and Mary Jane Leu turned the estate into a tropical and subtropical garden. In 1961, they gave the 50-acre property, including the home and gardens, to the City of Orlando.

The Historic Leu House was built in 1888 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That house helps the gardens feel rooted. You are not just walking through plant beds. You are moving through an old Orlando property that changed hands, grew, and then became public space.

For visitors, the best part is the mix: camellias, palms, roses, shady paths, seasonal flowers, and a house museum with its own access rules. Check garden hours, house tour times, July closures, and weather before going. This is a softer side of Orlando, and it rewards a slower visit.
