Florida shorebird posting signs need room on the sand

Florida shorebird and seabird signs can change where people walk, drive, fly kites, place chairs, leash dogs, and move around a beach.

On a Florida beach, a small posted area can be a big deal for birds.

FWC’s shorebird guidance tells people to stay out of areas posted with shorebird or seabird signs. It also points to simple beach habits: keep dogs leashed and away from nesting areas, avoid flying kites near nesting birds, slow down where beach driving is allowed, and keep trash from drawing predators.

That does not mean the whole beach day has to turn stiff. It means the towel, cooler, dog walk, kite, stroller, and photo stop should give the posted area room. The birds are using the same sand in a much more delicate way than people are.

Before settling in, check for signs, ropes, volunteer directions, local beach rules, and any current nesting notices. If birds seem upset or keep moving away, back up. The beach is more pleasant when the people and birds are not crowding each other.
