Florida public pool permits start before the water opens

Florida public pools need a health operating permit path, so condos, hotels, gyms, apartments, and attractions should keep pool papers with the building file.

A Florida public pool is not just a nice line in a brochure.

The health operating permit belongs in the file before the pool opens. Florida Health also ties the pool permit path to the building side. For a new pool or a pool change, the operating permit application comes before the building permit can move. The building side also waits on the health permit before the final completion or use paper.

That can matter for a condo, hotel, apartment complex, gym, school, attraction, campground, or clubhouse. A pool may look finished before the paper trail is done. The water can be blue. The chairs can be lined up. The gate can still need the right health file.

Owners and managers should keep the operating permit, plan papers, inspection reports, daily logs, service records, safety forms, owner-change papers, and any building closeout together. Buyers, renters, and board members can ask where the current permit and inspection file live before treating the pool as just another perk.

Before opening, changing, or taking over a public pool, check Florida Health and the county health path. A short permit check is easier than sorting the file after guests are already asking why the gate is locked.
