Florida mangrove trimming starts before the saw

Florida mangroves are regulated, so waterfront owners should check DEP or the delegated local office before trimming.

On a Florida shoreline, mangroves are not just shrubs with a view.

Florida treats red, black, and white mangroves under mangrove trimming rules. The office that handles the question may be a DEP district office or a local government with delegated authority. Check before the saw comes out.

Some small homeowner trimming can fit an exemption, but the details matter. The height, depth of the mangrove fringe, past trimming, location, and whether a professional mangrove trimmer is needed can all change the answer.

For a waterfront home, keep a simple folder with photos, the shoreline sketch, past trim records if any, the DEP or local answer, and the name of anyone hired to trim. Ask the office what record should stay with the property file. The goal is not to make yard work feel bigger than it is. It is to keep the view, the mangroves, and the paperwork in the same conversation.
