Florida's left lane is not a cruise lane
Florida's right-lane guidance treats the far-left lane as a passing and traffic-flow lane, not a place to settle in on a busy highway.
Florida highway driving feels better when the left lane is treated like a passing lane, not a living room.
FLHSMV’s right-lane safety page points to Florida’s rule about using the right-hand lanes so traffic can keep moving. It also warns about staying in the far-left lane while a faster vehicle is coming up behind, unless the driver is getting ready for a left turn.
That does not mean every drive turns into a race. It means the far-left lane has a job. On busy roads, a driver camping there can make other drivers bunch up, pass on the wrong side, or make quick moves that add stress for everyone.
The calmer habit is simple: use the left lane to pass, signal early, then move back when it is safe. On city streets, watch for left turns and merging traffic. On highways, let the lane do its job and keep the trip smoother.
