Florida discretionary sales surtax is a county line

Florida's state sales tax can have a county surtax layer, so a purchase, rental, or business sale may need a county-rate check.

Florida sales tax is not always just the statewide rate you have in your head.

Many counties have a discretionary sales surtax. That local layer can affect retail sales, rentals, leases, and some business tax calculations. The county tied to the sale or delivery can matter, so a purchase in one county may not price out the same way as a purchase in another.

For a shopper, this can explain why a receipt looks a little higher than expected. For a small seller, it is a reminder to check the county rate before setting up a sales tax process or quoting customers.

Use Florida Revenue’s surtax page for the current county list and rules. If the sale involves shipping, a rental, a vehicle, or a business account, do not guess from a neighbor’s receipt. Check the county layer and save the rate source with your records.
