Eatonville keeps Black municipal history close to Orlando

Eatonville's town history gives the Orlando area one of Florida's most important Black municipal stories.

Eatonville is small on the map, but its history carries real weight.

The town traces its start to newly freed Black settlers who came to the area in the 1880s. In 1887, residents voted for local officers and formed the town. Eatonville’s own history presents it as the first town in this country organized, governed, and incorporated by Black citizens.

So Eatonville is more than a place beside Orlando. It is a story about land, local votes, churches, schools, family life, and community building after slavery. That story deserves more care than a quick drive-through or a single event mention.

Check the town’s own history and event details before visiting. If you are nearby for Orlando, Winter Park, or Maitland, Eatonville helps put the area in a wider frame. It is close by, but it should be understood on its own terms.
