Devil's Den makes Williston feel underground

Devil's Den near Williston is a private prehistoric spring in a cave, giving Levy County one of Florida's stranger below-ground water stops.

Devil’s Den is one of those places that reminds you Florida has a lot going on under the surface.

Near Williston, the spring sits inside a cave with an opening above the water. It is an underground spring in a 120-foot-wide cave, with water that stays around 72 degrees year-round. Visit Florida lists it as a pre-historic spring and a Williston dive and snorkel stop.

The name makes it sound spooky, but the picture is simpler: rock, water, light from above, and a private site with rules. This is not a normal swimming hole where you wander in whenever you feel like it. Reservations, equipment, waivers, age rules, and dive or snorkel requirements can shape the whole visit.

That is what makes the place interesting. It has Florida spring beauty, but it also feels more like entering a room than visiting a riverbank. Levy County gets a below-ground water story that is very different from a beach day.

Check the current reservation and visitor rules before going. Devil’s Den works best when the plan is made before you reach the gate.
