Deering Estate keeps Miami's Stone House and mangroves together

Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay ties Miami-Dade history, the 1896 Richmond Cottage, the 1922 Stone House, and Biscayne Bay land into one public place.

Deering Estate is one of the Miami-Dade places where the house story and the land story belong together.

The estate includes the Richmond Cottage, built in 1896, and the Stone House, completed in 1922. Miami-Dade also describes the site as tied to Charles Deering, art collecting, historic buildings, and the natural setting near Biscayne Bay.

That mix matters. A visitor can come for old rooms and pretty stonework, but the place is also about shoreline, habitat, and how wealthy winter estates shaped parts of South Florida. It gives Palmetto Bay a public history site that does not feel boxed into one theme.

The estate is also a good reminder that Miami history is not only downtown. Some of the strongest clues sit farther south, where old homes, bayfront land, and mangroves meet.

Before going, check current tours, admission, parking, programs, and trail access. Some parts may depend on schedule, weather, or restoration work. Deering Estate works best when you leave time for both the buildings and the grounds.
