Clewiston Museum keeps the sweet town story grounded

Clewiston's museum helps explain how Lake Okeechobee, sugar, cattle, fishing, fossils, and wartime aviation shaped this Hendry County city.

Clewiston is easy to sum up as sugar country. That is true, but it is only the front porch of the story.

The Clewiston Museum gives the city a wider frame. Its exhibits cover the Hendry and Glades region around southwest Lake Okeechobee. They reach from fossils and Native American history to the growth of Clewiston, fishing, cattle, sugar, and Riddle Field’s World War II aviation story.

That mix helps explain why Clewiston feels different from coastal Florida. The city sits beside the big lake, close to rich muck soil, farm roads, canals, and wide-open sky. Sugar is a major part of the identity. The museum also points to older land, older water, and people who built a working town in a hard, wet place.

If you stop in Clewiston, make the museum part of the visit instead of just driving through for lake access. Check current museum hours first, then give yourself enough time to connect the exhibits with what you see outside: the lake, the fields, the roads, and the slower rhythm of the southwest shore.
