Casa Feliz shows Winter Park's save-the-house story

Casa Feliz gives Winter Park a James Gamble Rogers II house story, with Spanish farmhouse style, local preservation, and one very careful move.

Casa Feliz is a Winter Park house with a second act. James Gamble Rogers II designed it in 1932 for Robert Bruce Barbour. The old Barbour Estate was built as an Andalusian-style masonry farmhouse during the Great Depression. It has heavy walls, arched openings, a tile roof, and a courtyard feel. Those parts help explain why many older Florida houses turn inward for shade and quiet.

The rescue is the part people remember. When the house was threatened in 2000, local supporters raised more than $1.2 million. Then they moved it about 300 yards to its present spot beside the Winter Park Golf Course. It was not a small job, and that is part of the charm. Casa Feliz now says a lot about Winter Park: old houses, civic pride, and a town willing to work hard to keep a landmark.
