Boca Raton helped put the IBM PC on the desk
Boca Raton's IBM facility helped turn the personal computer into a mainstream business and home tool in 1981.
Boca Raton is easy to picture as beaches, golf, shopping, and sunshine. The computer story gives it another layer.
IBM moved a computer facility to Boca Raton in 1967. In 1981, the first IBM PC was developed there. IBM ties the project to William Lowe, the Boca Raton lab, and a fast push to build a personal computer for small businesses and regular consumers.
The machine was not the first personal computer. The important part was scale and trust. IBM used an open approach that helped make the PC a standard other companies could build around. That changed offices, schools, kitchen tables, software, repair work, and small-business life.
For Florida, this widens the business map. The state’s economy is not only tourism, real estate, citrus, ports, and retirees. A South Florida lab helped shape the way people now work at a desk.
If you follow the story in Boca, check current historical society exhibits and local history material first. The old business footprint may be easier to understand through records and museum context than by looking for one perfect building.
