Alligator Alley is the Everglades crossing that feels long

Alligator Alley makes the I-75 drive between Collier and Broward feel like a real road-trip across water, wildlife country, tolls, and open distance.

Alligator Alley is one of those Florida roads that changes the mood of the trip.

It carries I-75 across the Everglades side of South Florida, between Collier County and Broward County. The drive can feel simple on a map. In the car, it feels longer and more open. Sawgrass, canals, weather, wildlife fencing, toll plazas, rest areas, and few easy turnoffs all become part of the day.

FDOT frames the corridor as more than a toll road. It is a route for recreation, tourism, commerce, and emergency travel, and it passes through environmentally and culturally sensitive land. That is a lot for one road to carry.

The practical part is easy to miss. Check fuel, weather, 511 alerts, toll setup, and rest stops before you are deep into the crossing. FDOT’s rest-area FAQ lists three rest areas on Alligator Alley, but a rest area is not the same as a town exit with every service.

The road is beautiful in a quiet way. It is also a reminder that South Florida distance can feel different when the Everglades is on both sides.
